Old Mondoro Bush Camp
Owned and operated by the Cumings family of Chiawa Camp, Old Mondoro is set in a grove of Acacia trees that tower above the massive elephant bulls that seem to be constantly feeding on them. On the banks of the Zambezi River in the Lower Zambezi National Park some 35km downstream from Chiawa Camp this is a beautiful and remote site overlooking a maze of hippo-inhabited islands and channels.

With only 8 beds Old Mondoro is the Lower Zambezi’s most intimate and private safari camp. Whilst Chiawa Camp is more luxurious and sophisticated, guests will also enjoy the very different and “back to the bush” atmosphere of Old Mondoro. The concept of Old Mondoro is simple – to step back from the larger, ultra-luxurious lodges seemingly springing up everywhere, and rather provide guests with an authentic remote safari that concentrates on the wildlife and bush experience whilst not forgoing any necessary creature comforts.

All rooms have spacious, shaded verandas, choice of 2 singles or King bed, featuring Egyptian cotton linens, discreet but effective insect screens, indoor loo and washbasin for convenient access, outdoor shower, outdoor “splash tub” for indulgent baths or, in the hot months, refreshing dips with fabulous views.

The camp boasts 3 pro guides and 3 vehicles for only 8 guests, offering total flexibility and a choice of day and nights game drives, walks, game viewing by boat, canoeing and catch & release fishing.

Transfers between Old Mondoro and Chiawa Camp are by motor boat, usually after lunch so guest’s don’t miss out on any safari activities and take about 1 hour non-stop – longer if necessary! Transfers are available by canoe only (all day long!) or by a combination of canoe and motorboat (7 hours) downstream only, by prior and special arrangement.
